A Responsive Candle Light Event

Participatory performance, installation, Flat, Amsterdam, 2015

The installation is a continuation of 'In the Event of Fire', where people call in live with a video call to blow out a candle over the internet shown at Flat in the Bijlmer, Amsterdam on 12 December 2015 and was organised by BrowserBased.

The sound that comes in via the call is redirected to Ableton Live and Soundflower to create a deep bass from the subwoofer that can blow out the candle when someone blows into the microphone at home.

The Candle Room

On one side was my computer with Firefox Hello open so people could call in directly.

And in sight of the computer's camera was the subwoofer and the candle.

When someone called in the sound output would be in such a low bass that the person on the other side of the line could blow out the candle.

Yay!

The Light Room

The lights from Philips Hue would respond through an app on my phone to the sounds made by the caller.

The Menu

'Les Dames de Vent et le Feu' (Meike Bont and Liney Chang) made a special menu for the evening:
